Born Louisa May Alcott on November 29, 1832, in Germantown, Pennsylvania, to Amos Bronson Alcott, the transcendentalist philosopher and educator, and Abigail May Alcott; 1834 family returns to Boston; 1843 family joins a communal farm, Fruitlands, in Harvard, Massachusetts, with Charles Lane and Henry Wright; 1844 Fruitlands experiment fails; 1848 writes her first story, The Rival Painters: A Tale of Rome; 1851 goes into service to a family in Dedham, Massachusetts, but returns home after seven weeks; 1852 publishes The Rival Painters in the Olive Branch.
