This article discusses the use of the WI-38 cell line as a model for studying fibroblast differentiation in lung fibrosis. The study aimed to determine whether WI-38 cells could be used to investigate the switch between myofibroblasts (MYFs) and lipofibroblasts (LIFs) in fibrosis formation and resolution. The researchers treated WI-38 cells with TGF-β1 and Metformin to induce MYF and LIF differentiation, respectively, and analyzed the phenotypic and transcriptomic changes in the cells. The results showed that WI-38 cells displayed similar responses to treatment as lung fibroblasts from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients, and the study provided evidence for the reversible switch between LIFs and MYFs. The researchers concluded that WI-38 cells are a valuable model for studying fibroblast differentiation in lung fibrosis. [Extracted from the article]
