The article focuses on the different productions presented by the Bread and Puppet Theater at the 1990 Los Angeles Festival in California. It is true that the Vermont-based theater's combination of popular mask and puppet aesthetics, community-based performance, and reliance on socially responsive and even spiritual themes had much in common with the Asian theaters at the festival as well as with the Native American performance groups there from Alaska, New Mexico and Oaxaca, Mexico. One of the theater forms used by Bread and Puppet in Los Angeles has its roots deep in the theater styles of European popular culture.
