Singapore is building the world's most sophisticated optical fiber network, expecting to link the 230 square mile island's business districts by 1995 and every home and school by early 2000. With the entire island booked together, information companies win have a unique opportunity to test interactive television and video telephony to remarket the experience on a worldwide basis. A top planner said that Singapore has been a switching center for goods and people and it wants to be a switching center for Information, too. Hewlett-Packard has some 180 researchers in Singapore and will write much of the software to manage the island's new network.
