The article presents a discussion about the discourse of education for sustainable development (ESD). A new discourse in environmental education has represented the advancements in the field. The first advancement involves the replacement of a problem orientation related to environmental education by a contrasting positive orientation of ESD. The second advancement concerns itself with a shift of focus from environmental concerns to social and human development issues. The concept of sustainable development can be socially and culturally contested because it can be defined in different ways.
