A low-cost and non-intrusive methodology using a solidification-slicing approach was proposed in this work for the investigation of radial and axial segregation phenomenon in a spouted bed. The effects of diameter, density, and shape of the particles, as well as the initial particle loading, and the inlet air velocity on segregation, were qualitatively and quantitatively assessed. Suitable radial and axial segregation indexes were used to quantify the segregation degree. The proposed approach contributed to understanding the particle mixture dynamic on the entire bed material. Unlabelled Image • A low-cost non-intrusive method was proposed to study segregation in a spouted bed. • The particle diameter, density, and shape effects on segregation were assessed. • Particle initial loading, and air velocity effects on segregation were investigated. • The initial particle loading plays an important role in segregation, under the studied conditions. • Air velocity higher than 20% of the minimum spouting did not affect segregation.
